We are the children of Chinese immigrants to the United States. Despite being born and raised in this country, we both grew up with a strong Asian culinary influence as part of our family culture. Ramen originated in China; the term derives from the words "noodle and pull" in Chinese. It was not introduced into Japanese culture until the early 1900's. Its entry into the US was primarily based on the introduction of the "instant ramen noodle," which has remained a necessity in college dorm rooms to this day. We've had our fair share of instant noodles, but those days are long gone! We hope you feel the same way after trying ours.
Ramen evokes feelings of comfort, simplicity, and warmth. Its popularity in Japan has surpassed that of a dining option and has become a national pastime. In Japan, there are over 25,000 ramen shops. Recently, global trends indicate that Ramen is becoming a staple of Asian restaurant menu items.
In the end, Uchiwa’s menu features our ramen recipes for a very simple reason: WE LOVE IT.
Uchiwa is a play on words as it can be 'fan' ( 団扇) but uchi (家) can mean house and our , written as ha (は) but pronounced wa. Therefore, Uchiwa Ramen can be “fan ramen” ( 団扇ラメン) Or "our house is ramen" (家はラメン)
Finally, “uchi” used in the term “uchi-soto” refers to an “insider-outsider” relationship. In Japan, this term expresses the deep desire of the insider to help the outsider feel welcome, usually referring to going to any and all extremes to be hospitable to a guest.
